Geometry in baking
Hello mates! Today we are talking about geometry and cooking. Yes, you read right! Believe it or not, cooking has a lot to do with geometry. Not only you find measuring, conversations and other types of calculatings in cooking but geometry as well. Therefore, without the basic knowledge of mathematics, you cannot go as far as, for example, a baker.
Let me introduce you to this amazing world of geometry. I am sure you will be amazed!
I would
like to start talking about the different shapes of all the tins used for baking.
There are many forms of moulds. From circles, squares, and hexagons for
birthday cakes, to rectangles for making egg flans (which is not exactly a
cake, but you get my point). These are some of the most typical moulds.
It is up to
your imagination to use different geometric shapes to create complete works of
art. If, for example, you want to make a cake like the Mickey Mouse cake below,
it is very interesting to mix shapes to get a result to your liking.
But it is
also interesting to take other shapes from the ones you already have in order
to make new ones, as would be the case of making a moustache-shaped cake. You
don't always need a mould to bake, but imagination and both the artistic and
mathematical intelligence.
You can see that working with geometric shapes is very present in cake making because of the moulds. But where else can we find geometry? Well, it's easy. In the portion of the cake itself, or in the plate where it is served. They would be an almost triangular prism (and I say almost because one of its rectangular sides is circular) and a circle respectively.
But we also
find geometry in the decorations of these cakes, which can be anything from
hexagons joined on their sides to flowers positioned symmetrically to each
other. Also, how about dividing a circle in four parts and creating a pattern
with it? Let me show you what I mean.
It is really interesting! But let me just talk to you about how you can also put geometric shapes inside the cake! This is a very pleasant surprise when you first cut your cake. I really do not know how to make these, but I think they look great. From flowers and hearts to basic lines made out of different colours. These designs do really impress me.
I am sure that, for people who have the hobby of baking or doing a cooking-related activity, this way of approaching geometry can be really helpful for them to learn some concepts that could be otherwise more difficult.
Last but not least, let me share with you a video I just found on geometry shapes in food in general. Take a look at it! Here is the link:

This was all for today's post. I hope you enjoyed it and do not hesitate to comment whatever comes to your mind.
See you soon!! :)
